Biografia Andrew J. Fleming, CFA, is Vice President and Portfolio Manager for the Value Plus Fund and its corresponding Small Cap Value Plus Strategy. He began at Heartland as a research intern during the summer of 2011 while he was a student in the Master of Business Administration in Applied Securities Analysis Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He joined the Investment Team as a Research Analyst in June 2012, after completing the program, and began as a Portfolio Manager in 2015. Before beginning the securities analysis program, Fleming was an Associate for two years at McKinley Reserve, a Wisconsin-based family office. He supported the private investment activities of the firm and helped raise capital for its portfolio companies. His work included due diligence, market research, financial modeling, and valuation analysis. In addition to his master’s degree, Fleming earned a law degree from Marquette University in 2007 and a bachelor’s in finance from Georgetown University in 2004.

Biografia Bradford A. Evans, CFA, is Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager for the Value Plus Fund and its corresponding Small Cap Value Plus Strategy. Evans began at Heartland in 1996 as a Research Associate. He was promoted to Equity Research Analyst, during which time he developed expertise in the Energy, Consumer, and Materials sectors. Following nearly four years at High Rock Capital, Evans returned to Heartland as Portfolio Manager for the Value Fund in 2004, which he co-managed until 2015. He became Portfolio Manager of the Value Plus Fund in April 2006 and also was Director of Equity Research from 2011 to 2016. Evans is a vocal advocate for small-cap value investing. He has been quoted by the national financial media, including Barron’s, CNBC, Fortune, Bloomberg, BusinessWeek, and The Wall Street Journal. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor’s in international relations, Russian, and political science in 1995. He also spent a semester studying at Moscow State University in Russia.
Adam J. Peck Founder and CIO 2007 2016
Biografia Prior to forming Riverwater in 2016, Adam was a Partner and Portfolio Manager at Heartland Advisors where he co-managed a multi-billion dollar small-cap value mutual fund. He currently serves on the board of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Coral Gables Trust Company, and the Endowment Committee of the Milwaukee Public Museum. Adam earned a B.S. in International Relations with a focus on Environmental Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. That focus kindled Adam’s interest in socially responsible living and socially responsible investing. He continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned an MBA from the Applied Security Analysis Program. Adam is a CFA® charter holder and a member of the CFA Institute since 2004. Adam has appeared on CNBC, Bloomberg TV & Radio, and Fox Business News. He has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, and Bloomberg Business Week, among other publications. Adam lives in Milwaukee with his wife, two sons, and dog, Tucker. He is a Packer fan and enjoys the outdoors.
Michael D. Petroff Vice President 2007 2010
Biografia Petroff held the position of Vice President - Institutional Sales and Portfolio Manager from August 2007 until February 2010. He was with Heartland Advisors from 2006. Prior to joining Heartland Advisors, he was Vice President-Institutional Equity Sales for Robert W. Baird & Co., Inc. from 2003 to 2006 and was a Vice President in the Financial Sponsors Group for Deutsche Bank AG (previously BT Securities, Inc.) from 1995 to 2002. Michael Petroff received his AB from Princeton University in Economics and MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Rodney D. Hathaway Portfolio Manager 2002 2007
Biografia Mr. Hathaway joined 1492 Capital Management in 2008, and is the lead manager of the Small Cap Value strategy for separate accounts. Mr. Hathaway is also a co-portfolio manager on the Small Cap Core Alpha strategy for separate account portfolios. Mr. Hathaway has managed both a public mutual fund and private accounts for individuals and institutions since 2001. He has 16 years of experience as an investment professional in the U.S. and previously spent 10 years, from November 1997 through August 2007, with Heartland Advisors, Inc., a nationally recognized firm based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mr. Hathaway completed two years of coursework in engineering at Brigham Young University and later received his B.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, graduating cum laude. He received his M.B.A. from the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University, in the executive program. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA©) designation and is a member of both the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Milwaukee.
Eric J. Miller Managing Director 2000 2006
Biografia Eric Miller is Vice President and Portfolio Manager for the Heartland Value Fund and its corresponding Small Cap Value Strategy. He returned to Heartland in October 2015 and has a long history with the Firm. He initially joined in 1994 as part of the Sales Team and later transitioned to a Research Analyst. He became Portfolio Manager for the Value Fund and its corresponding Small Cap Value Strategy in 1997, Select Value Fund in 1999, and Value Plus Fund and its corresponding Small Cap Value Plus Strategy in 2003. Miller stepped away from Heartland in 2006 when he relocated to Chicago and joined Advisory Research. He served in several roles during his time at the Firm, including Managing Director, Portfolio Manager, and Research Analyst. He managed both a small-cap and all-cap institutional product before shifting focus to a small-cap opportunity fund. Previously, he spent eight years at American Appraisal Associates, serving briefly as Head of U.S. Operations before becoming Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He also was a Financial Manager at Chilton Company and a Financial Analyst at FMC Corporation. He earned a master’s in accounting and finance and a bachelor’s in political science from Dartmouth in 1979 and 1975, respectively.
William J . Nasgovitz CEO 1993 2006
Biografia Mr. Will Nasgovitz has served as a Portfolio Manager. He also serves as Portfolio Manager for Heartland Advisors’ advisory clients. He previously served as a Research Analyst from 2004 to 2006 and a Research Associate from November 2003 to 2004. He is the Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Heartland Advisors and since May 2012 has served as Chief Executive Officer of Heartland. Prior to joining Heartland Advisors, Mr. Will Nasgovitz had been a Senior Research Associate with Cambridge Associates from 2000 to 2002. Mr. Will Nasgovitz is the son of Mr. Bill Nasgovitz, President and Director of the Heartland Funds and Portfolio Manager of the Value Fund.
Gerry M. Sandel Senior Vice President, Director 2000 2003
Biografia Sandel is senior vice president and director of equity research with Heartland Advisors, his employer since August 1999. Previously, he was a senior vice president and principal with Stein Roe & Farnham from July 1997 to August 1999. Prior to that, he spent four years as a vice president with M&I Investment Management. He also spent two years as a vice president and director of equity research with Acorn Asset Management and four years as a vice president with Abraham & Sons Asset Management.
Patrick J. Retzer Senior Vice President, Director 1997 2000
Biografia Retzer is a senior vice president and director of fixed income with Heartland Advisors, and has been associated with the firm in various capacities since 1988. Previously, he spent four years as a corporate product manager with Aardvark/McGraw-Hill, and three years as an accountant with BDO Seidman.
Ronald B. Saba Portfolio Manager 1996 1997
Biografia Mr. Saba has more than twenty years of experience performing fundamental research and managing equity portfolios. He joined Horizon Investments in 2009 and is responsible for all fundamental equity research. Prior to joining Horizon, Mr. Saba was Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Charlotte Capital, LLC from 1999 through 2006, where he was lead portfolio manager for the firm’s two institutional investment products.
